I want to use ee 2 for forums and wiki only.

I know that ee is powerful, but figuring out how to use it has always been a huge flaw ( starting with pmachine til now ).

    My forums are here, http://support.cartloom.com/index.php/forums

How do I make the index.php page display an error IF entered directly into the address bar ( i.e.  http://support.cartloom.com/index.php )?

My suggestion would be to run the forums through an EE template, simply add it to “site/index”. That way, your forums would be at http://example.com/index.php/ although http://example.com would work as well. Makes sense?

could use htaccess to solve the problem a couple different ways:
    1) specify /index.php/forums as your site’s index
    2) 301 redirect /, /index.php, /site/index.php, etc. to index.php/forums/

I like this option. Can you explain how I would go about doing this?

As I’ve said, just run the forum module through your main template: http://expressionengine.com/docs/modules/forum/other_features.html
