Several EE installations in subfolders on same server

I’ve been working with a client who has created a dozen or so EE websites. I was surprised to see that he has them all installed in subfolders off a single server root.  I guess he is maintaining these sites so wanted to have them all in one place. I was surprised that you could even do this without there being issues, but it appears to be working fine for him.  Can you think of any reason why you wouldn’t advise this kind of installation?  I’m currently having an issue with one of these sites installing the LG-htaccess-generator extension, and I didn’t have a problem installing it when it was on a stand-alone site that was installed in root.

    Hi django6,

There should be no problem with doing this - whether or not that’d be a preferred setup is difficult to say. You aren’t referring to Multiple Site Manager sites are you? What exactly is the problem installing an extension in one of these sites? Are you able to install and use other extensions?

    Cheers

No, not multiple sites manager, just a dozen or so separate installations.  What is the advantage of the multiple site manager?  I assume it’s so you only have one installation of EE to install and upgrade, but are there other advantages?

I’ve only installed the two LG extensions. I have no idea why they are not working, I have a question posted over in extensions about that. I’m just suspecting the subfolder installation could be an issue with how the extension/htaccess finds the urls to rewrite them

    Hi django6,

Okay, with respect to the extensions that’s the best thing to do. MSM has several advantages over separate sites. You’ve already identified one of them; the ease of upgrading. One other important one is that there is a single control panel to manage all the sites and you have the potential to share data across the sites. There is more information here.

If you have further pre-sales questions about MSM then please email .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).

    Cheers
