I have a couple of websites running on Expression Engine on a shared hosting account. Although I am generally happy with my webhost they are on the other side of the world so connectivity is ocassionally an issue. Therefore I am considering swithing to get a VPS (Virtual Private Server) at a webhost here in the Netherlands.

However, this is unknow territory for me because I don’t have the slightest idea how much memory and processor time Expression Engine (or any other web application for that matter) uses. Are there any guidelines for this so I can estimate if the VPS is a good “fit” ? Any way that I can see how much memory my site now uses at my current host ?

At this moment, I have a couple of fairly standard websites (not a lot of plugins/modules) that get around a 1.000 visitors/daily I estimate. The only script that sometimes runs out of memory is the FeedGrab plugin.

So, although my visitor numbers are not that big, I would hate to be stuck on an underpowered VPS server, and I would also hate to be forced to upgrade to a more expensive hosting plan within a week after moving everything.  😊

Thanks in advance for any insights.

alpcom, if you’re running out of memory you might want to see how much is allocated and up it if needed.

Have you seen: EEWiki:// HowTo Determine Memory Limits

    What’s that set to?

    Dear Sue,
the current memory limit is set to 150MB. I do not know if this is per process or the total amount my username is allowed to run.

However, I am (at this moment) not too concerned about the “out-of-memory” of the FeedGrab plugin, because that runs in a seperate process initiated by a cron job, no user is going to notice.

I am much more concerned about the amount of memory needed to run a standard site. But from reading the wiki, I figure that 64MB should suffice (http://expressionengine.com/wiki/HowTo_Override_Memory_Limitations/). So if I have a VPS with 512MB I should be fine, right ?

Memory is not everything, obviously, but it sounds like you should be fine. Let me move this over to “General”, we’re not really in “Tech Support” anymore…
