Anyone out there have experience with either RPXee or fabEE for Facebook integration? Pros/cons. I notice that RPXee which supports OpenID, which is intriguing, or will that lead to a lot of spam, etc.

    thanks

I hadn’t heard of RPXee before seeing this thread - googled and found their site here. - can’t find the download link there or the purchase link to find out the price.

fabEE is here. Haven’t used it yet, but am interested.

It’s nicely hidden in the Requirements section at the top of the page. It says Basic RPX Account and then has a link to the information. I came across that exact same site yesterday too and ended up reading the whole page to find it! I don’t usually read a page from top to bottom so it took a lot longer than normal to find it!! 😊

    Best wishes,

holy user interface problem batman. If it’s that hard to find people will walk away and forget about it - just like I did.

Nah it’s dead easy to find after around 20 minutes 😉

I know exactly what you mean. As I said I don’t ever read a page from top to bottom, rather skim for the important stuff and I consider that a definite important point. Needs a big Buy Now icon or something on there definitely.

    Best wishes,

I am interested in this topic as well. Also, can sombody explain in a nutshell what the facebook connect exactly does in combination with ee? Does it go both ways? meaning, when somebody comments or posts on your ee site, does that connect to facebook? what information exactly DOES get transmitted? I am still a little confused on that.. Also with the login in etc and creating new members and so forth.

Hmm, user interface problem should be solved. Sorry about that guys. In fact, we’ve rebranded it to Socialee. RPXee made no sense to anyone.

Mark: big Buy Now button in place. Thanks for the tip 😉

Florian: Basically FB Connect allows users to authenticate with your EE system using Facebook. It also allows them to post their comments and other things to their FB profile. In our case with Socialee we can pull certain information fields from their profile upon registration, which populates a new EE member profile.

I’m happy to answer any other questions about it as they come up. It’s not a simple module, at least not initially, but it really brings EE into 2010 with social sharing/publishing and OpenID support. The idea is to make user participation as easy as possible.

Using Socialee, can users authenticate to EE with, say, Twitter and have their respective profile image displayed as avatar next to the comments they left in EE? And does it update on the EE site when the user changes his profile image in Twitter?

Hmm, in theory that’s exactly what it should do. I have to admit I haven’t seen it pull the profile image from Twitter yet but I’ll check with our team here to confirm it. 😊

This is a very interesting add-on!

Is there any news about the profile image update thing?

  • #13 / Feb 24, 2010 3:57pm

Yeah, we got it working in v1.1. Up and available now.

This is very very interesting.  I was just looking at RPX - it looks very cool.  I have a couple questions though about Socialee:

Can you explain the member group thing?  You basically have to relegate member groups over to this extension so you can’t use groups for other things (like specific content access or CP access).  Is that right?  I could work around that if needed, but it means a bit of work…

What happens when you use this and then someone changes their Facebook password or photo or something?  Does that trickle down to the EE site?

I’m using Solspace’s User module.  Do you know if these are compatible?

I have a pretty strict no-hacking-core-files philosophy.  Have you any plans to get past this at some point (talked to EE people perhaps?).

    Thanks - this looks awesome!

    Yep, RPX is pretty cool.

Regarding the member groups: you can only use one member group for registrations, but then you can change their group afterward (this is in theory, we have yet to test this).

Users can change their Facebook password, no problem. It’s totally separate from what we’re doing with RPX. Their photos and profiles get updated each time they log into your site.

No problems with Solspace’s User module. We use it all the time too.

The little hack is made because there is no hook to bypass the password checking code in EE. It’s pretty small.

Also note that we’re only supporting 1.6.8 at this point, which is (most likely) the last update to the 1.x line. We have no immediate plans to support EE2.0 until we start building clients’ sites in it.
