Alright guys, new to EE so be kind 😊

Im looking at three options for a new forum / bb for a large corporate forum / bulletin board system.

    1) Develop from scratch.. long winded but custom built…can definately do it just time…
    2) Use vbulletin bb, phpbb etc and skin / customize… can do, but want the functionality of EE..
    3) EE. But im an EE beginner and not 100% sure.

How easy is it to pick up, install, skin and add custom built addons, helpers, scripts, functionality etc. I havent got the full spec yet but its a lot of customization by the looks of it. I am liking the EE environment, community etc, so leaning towards EE but not sure..

    What do you reckon guys?

why not buy the EE forum module?

    *edit*

    sorry completely misunderstood your post.

I haven’t done much work with the EE forum module but it sits nicely alongside an EE site.

Obviously, it’s a choice for some but an awful lot of effort simply to reinvent the wheel (there are so many decent Forums/BB available for next to nothing).

    2) Use vbulletin bb, phpbb etc and skin / customize… can do, but want the functionality of EE.

This option will be the easiest, but depends on what kind of functionality you want. EE can peacefully coexist with any Forums/BB but won’t have much integration. If you require membership integration between EE and the Forums/BB, then on to #3…

Installation doesn’t get much easier. Download the files from EE, upload to the respective locations on your EE site, turn on through the CP. EE’s Forums Module doesn’t have quite the bells and whistles of Invision or vBulletin but is very capable. Those forums have plenty of skins available for customization, which EE does not (customizing EE’s Forums Module does take some work).
