I have the same problem as the user above. I checked each of these items from the Wiki, and none of these are an issue:

- the path and/or URL to the CAPTCHA directory is not specified correctly under Admin > Captcha Preferences

- images/captchas/ directory (or whichever is specified) is not set to 777/writable

- the server does not support True Type Fonts (try turning the option off under ‘Admin > Captcha Preferences’)

- GD library isn’t installed and/or working correctly

- system/lib/words.php file doesn’t exist

When I visit the /images/captchas/ folder on the server, there are no images in the folder. Usually the folder is full of cached images.

Does anyone have an idea what might be wrong?

Just to confirm, captcha images were working on your site and now they are not?

Yes. The only change was the hosting was moved to a new server, but we checked everything and nothing seems to have changed.

I know you mentioned that you followed the Wiki, but can you just double-check that the following paths have been set correctly on the “Captcha Preferences” page?

CP Location: Admin ›  System Preferences ›  Captcha Preferences

1) Server Path to Captcha Folder
2) Full URL to Captcha Folder

Also, try manually clearing the “cache” folder via FTP (located at /system/cache). Remove everything but the index.html file from the “cache” directory.

Did this. No change. The most obvious solution is that the URLs are wrong, but I’ve checked and they’re right. I emptied the cache too.

You in fact don’t have support for the GD library. Contact your host regarding applying this to your account
