In my forum, on the post submission form the box for email notifications is ticked by default (as it is on these forums). However, if a member goes to their control panel and switches off the email notification option, because the box is ticked by default on the post submission form they are still receiving emails on threads they contribute to (unless they unclick this option every single time).

Furthermore, because the notification email box on the post submission form is ticked by default, they aren’t receiving ‘smart notifications’ which means some members will receive about ten emails for one thread overnight.

My question therefore, is this - what is the point of the option to stop email notifications in the member control panel, if they then still have to unclick the option (or I remove the default checkmark) from the email notification box on the post submission form? Shouldn’t this act as an override?

This is what I could gather for you, from our dev team.

This is actually the expected behavior. If you don’t want the box ticked by default then you could un-check “Enable email notifications by default when you post messages”.

Also, Smart notifications will still be in effect even when ticking the notification box.

Can you clarify which option are they switching off? There are (2) options, one for receiving emails from administrators, and one for receiving emails from other users.

Here’s the issue - even if a member unticks the box in their control panel that says “Enable email notifications by default when you post messages”, because (by default) the box ‘Notify me via email when someone posts in this thread’ is ticked on the post form, they still receive email notifications.

Surely the option in the member control panel should be an override?

They are switching off the options that says:

“Enable email notifications by default when you post messages”.

I simply want to have the notification of new posts option enabled by default, but allow members to simply untick the option from their control panel if they don’t want this - rather than manually unticking the option in the post form each time they post.

The member CP option is an over-ride.  If the user does not have that ticked then the checkbox should not be ticked when they go to post.  Are you using a modified theme?

That’s how I thought it should work! Yes, I am running a modified theme but I don’t believe these settings were adjusted at all.

How/where does the option on the post submission form refer back to the member settings in order to determine whether or not to check the box so I can check the code?

Before we get into the mechanics, can you try switching to the default theme and ensuring that it works as expected?
