I’m having trouble understanding how the Membership Module and Forum Module work together.  Does the Forum module handle user registration, profiles, etc. on its own, or does it make use of the Membership module?  If I customize my member profile pages, would the Forum module then use these pages for member registration, or would I have to customize another set of templates as well?

    Thanks,
    Jim

Different front end, but all the members end up in the same database. If a user registers on your forum, they will be registered with the rest of your site. If a member registers on your non-forum site, then they will be able to use the forum.  This is, of course, dependent on membership privileges.

You would have to customize another set of pages.

FYI: on one of my EE sites, I only use the forum for member stuff - no CP access at all for members.
