    Hello,

I have a reseller account for my personal domains and before buying MSM I just asked my host, asmallorange.com [ASO], if that expansion would work in their shared servers, and this is what they said:

“Yes, it is possible to use that expansion [MSM] if sub-domains need to be able to access your main installation directory.”

As you can see they were talking only about sub-domains, so I asked again specifically about domains, and here it is what they replied:

“If you are wanting a cPanel account located at /home/account1/public_html/ to be able to access the files of another cPanel account located at /home/account2/public_html/ then no, that will not work do to permission restrictions.”

Since cPanel is very common and ASO doesn’t use esoteric* server configurations, I’m sure there should be a way to have MSM working on this environment.

    Thank you for any help,

    Abraham

    * I said that because time ago I had a customer with all his sites hosted on a Windows server on GoDaddy… Just a nightmare.

    Abraham,

One of the requirements of MSM is that all Sites must reside on the same server. So in fact your host is correct in his assumption.

So this type of set-up should work where you have 2 domains under 1 account

    located at /home/account1/site1/
    located at /home/account1/site2/

But not 2 domains under 2 different accounts as they are more than likely on different servers

    located at /home/account1/site1/
    located at /home/account2/site2/

    Does that make sense?

Maybe confirm what happens when you add an extra domain to your account and where the new domains files will be in relation to the domain you set the account up on.

Thank you for your reply John.

I understand that any account I set-up is created on the same server, my reseller account is asigned to a server named “amelia”, so anything I create is always inside that server. In fact I can check that all my account are there.

In order to create a new account I use WebHost Manger (WHM), but I’m not sure about what to look for regarding your last comment…

    Thanks,

    Abraham

Abraham, in cPanel you create an addon domain. You wouldn’t use WHM, you’d use http://originalsite.com/cpanel and go from there.

    Does that help?

You’re right Sue, I was confused about that because never before had to use addon-domains.

I’m going to try late this day, but I think that would work. I will let you know.

    Thanks.

    Hi,

With the addon domain this is the folder structure I have now:

    /home/account1/site1/
    /home/account1/[public_html]/site2/

If I’m correct, this is what John indicated above, the second domain inside and relative to the home directory of the first one.

Additionally I can see a new ftp user specific to site2.

I understand that MSM should work perfectly in this set-up.

    Thank you!
