I just upgraded an ancient installation of EE 1.5.2 to 1.6.8 and am now failing to get any output whatsoever.

The main page serves blank, /master/ (the renamed system directory) spits out Error 403 Directory Access Is Forbidden. It is also giving me the same error message on other EE-specific directories like /images/. I diligently went back to check that all my file permissions are set at 644, that directories are 755, and that /system/cache/ is 777. The install had the usual rewrite conditions removing index.php in htaccess, I have completely removed the whole file and still no luck. This is the same host, the same directory, no migration whatsoever. What is going on?

PS: EE successfully updated incrementally from 1.5.2 to 1.6, then each point upgrade thereafter. Update appears to believe it completed successfully.

Resolved, but issue undetermined. I basically just installed the default files for 1.6.8 completely and ported over all my old stuff.

    Devon,

what do you mean by ported?

I cherry-picked all my user-level content—plugins, templates, images, themes and files—and moved them to their respective places in a completely new installation, as opposed to copying over critical directories as the update process typically entails.

    Devon,

As you have resolved the issue yourself this will be quite hard to troubleshoot but to make sure you have the most recent set of files up there, can you download a fresh copy of EE and run through a typical build update.
