There was a thread from around 3 years ago about someone working on this, but it seems depricated.

What I’m looking for:

Event Calendar
Event can have sub-tasks (like a conference having meetings)
Users can sign up for sub-tasks (People attending meetings)
Max #users per subtask (you can see where this is going)

Right now I’d settle for a good events calendar that could possibly be extended, it seemed like there was once traction on something like this.

You can build a basic event calendar using EE:

you could use comments for RSVP’ing/signing up, or you might prefer to build a custom module to handle that, and if you have max users then some custom work will be needed to make that limit.

Thanks Lisa, I kind of new it was going to need a custom module.  I was finger-crossing someone had already built one 😊
