I am creating a site for a client that manages a motocross association. I would like to use the member admin to allow new riders to register. However, once a rider selects / enters a racing number, I need that number to be unique and not allow any future riders to register the same number.

Is there anyway to do this with out creating custom php scripts to handle this?

Or is there any 3rd party plugins that could handle this?

Any insight on this or suggestions on how to handle this a different way would be greatly appreciated

    Thanks

I am afraid there is nothing built-in to ensure uniqueness of custom profile fields. You could probably use the member_id (which is unique), but apart from that, some custom coding would be required. Moving to Howto.

Can the member ID be tweaked or is it auto generated?

It’s automatically generated by the system, yes.

One other thing: perhaps you could use the “screen name” to your advantage here? This is a field that can be specified freely by the user, and which has uniqueness enforced by EE…

Interesting. can the field be changed to say something like Racing Number, instead of Screen Name?

It’ll depend. If you use a stand-alone registration form you can give it any name. Otherwise, ie if you’ll want to use EE’s built-in forms, an extension or a small hack might be required.
