Problem uploading images and getting new entries to appear

Hello, I made some attempts yesterday to create new entries on my website (adding people to a staff listing) and found that initially my new entries would not appear on the site even though Expression Engine was not giving me any errors. I had been using Firefox but was having problems with it and switched to Internet Explorer and my efforts in both browsers, even moving to a different computer, did not clear this problem up. Eventually the entries did appear but it took several hours.

In addition, I do not seem to be able to upload images. When I attempt to I get an error that there was a problem uploading the image, but no information beyond that. I’ve tried different file types, anything, and I cannot get files to upload. I have not gotten any messages that my file directory has reached capacity either. I’ve never had problems like this before.

Please excuse the long post. Any help would be appreciated.

    Welcome to the forums.

Eventually the entries did appear but it took several hours.

Make sure that the date of your entries does not lie in the future. Also, are you using caching mechanisms of any kind? That could certainly help to explain what you are seeing.

When I attempt to I get an error that there was a problem uploading the image, but no information beyond that.

How are attempting to upload the file, where? What error message, exactly, are you getting? Finally, what version and build of EE are you using?

    Hello, thanks for your reply.

I am attempting to upload images directly from the desktop. The images have been taken from the web and saved as jpegs. The message I receive is: “A problem was encountered while attempting to upload your file.”

As for the version of IE, I am away from that computer and so can’t tell you exactly what version it is but I imagine it needs updating as I typically use only Firefox and used IE as a last resort. I’ll try updating it and seeing what happens.

    Thanks!

Also, the dates of the entries are current and as far as I know there’s no caching being done (speaking as a relatively inexperienced EE user).

Joy, please post again when you can find out which version of EE you’re using, and what dates are showing up. Also make sure the entries are set to be open.

But it does sound like a setting for your site versus what you’re using.

Are you posting as a SuperAdmin?

I’m sorry for the delay. I will post again when I’m back in the office. I’m posting as a regular user. It is complicated but our site was begun by one developer, passed to another, and then passed to me to maintain (and I’m not that experienced in web design), and the details of the site’s development are not all known to me. The developers had admin status. The most recent developer did arrange for more advanced access to site development so I’ll see if we have SuperAdmin access. I’ll check our web documentation and see if I can contact our most recent developer.

Thanks for your help and patience!

No problem at all.  Please give us a hollar when you find that out.  If a couple of days go by and you can not see, please let us know and we can walk you through how to give yourself superadmin access.

Hi Greg, I’m sorry for the delay. Our previous web designer created a SuperAdmin account we can use and I have access to that.

I went ahead and cleared the caching on the site using the SuperAdmin account. And the entries are current, not set to any future date, and they are open, not closed or archived. I’m using IE 8 and Firefox 3.0.13.

As of this morning I’m still not able to upload any files. I continue to get the same message, that there was an error in uploading to the main upload directory. Perhaps I’m out of space to add files, though I’ve not gotten any messages about that?

    Thanks!

See if you can upload one of the smilies that comes with EE. They are small enough to test with.

I tried uploading and it did not work. However, I had a thought when looking at the site’s system preferences on the SuperAdmin account. Our site just recently (as of maybe a month or so ago, so I did not think of it until just now) was moved to a different server by our university and after that we had problems with it because the URL listed on the web pages no longer matched. I see some of the old URL links listed here and there on the System Preferences, and I was able to update it on the URL for emoticon preferences, for example. However, I tried updating to URL to Captcha folder in Captcha preferences because that seemed related to uploading images, and I was not allowed to do it. I received a message that said: “The path you submitted is not writeable. Please make sure the file permissions are set to 777.”

If I could somehow convert the old URLs to the new URL of the site, would that make a difference to uploading images, do you think? (I almost hope the answer isn’t this simple—it’ll mean I’ve wasted your time!) :ahhh:

    Thanks!

Yes, please make sure all path settings are up to date, and have the required permissions. This article might help, especially point #7.

Okay, the problem has been fixed at last. It was indeed the path settings and I’m now able to upload files normally. Thanks for the article, Ingmar, it helped a lot. I’m sorry for all the bother but appreciate the help very much.
