Changing the root directory

After searching in the various places here at expressionengine I have not really found an answer to my problem. Maybe someone within the forum has an idea or can help me.

Here ist my problem: Coming from the Wordpress-World I know that changing the site-URL can pretty much screw up the whole installation.

I have a running installation of EE (1.6.7) on “DOMAIN/v8” according to that I have my new EE-Weblog available at “DOMAIN/v8/weblog/” previously I ran my sites like this “DOMAIN/v1”, “DOMAIN/v2” etc. for the different versions and hosted my Weblog under “DOMAIN/weblog” to avoid that people had to upgrade their RSS and Bookmarks for the blog all the time.

Now: I am wondering whether I could move my whole EE installation up from the “v8” directory to the root of the site and what I would have to do in order to not break it. Alternatively I could root the domain directly into the “v8” directory and adjust the settings in EE. That way the weblog-URL would be “DOMAIN/weblog” again, as well. But, I am wondering which steps would be necessary for that?

If I change the rooting of the Domain from the root directory to the v8-directory I would have bad settings in the EE install, possibly ruining my install and making it inaccessible to me.

I hope I could describe my dilemma properly for you to understand it.

Thanks a lot in advance for your help!

Thanks Sue, that worked just as described. Will move on to update my install very soon as well. Thanks again and sorry for the blindness …
