I have two that I cannot see an obvious solution to:
- how do I allow members to keep their emails private: ie so that the audience cannot see who they are…
- How do I promote people from default member status to one with blogging privileges?

You could manually upgrade them or have them ‘buy’ a product which then puts them in a different member group.

I’m happy to manually update them, since I want retain control of the process. It’s just not obvious to me how I do that.

If you go to Admin -> Members & Groups—> View Members
Then select a member, go to Member Administration, choose Member Preferences and then change the group there.

Thanks Euan. I will do that directly.
Now, for my other problem.

Mick, where is it you don’t want your member’s email address showing?
#7 / Jul 27, 2009 10:42am
On the front page of the website. At the moment membership is voluntary. But the ‘privilege’ membership means they have to disclose a genuine email address whilst the unregistered can display anything they like.
All I need to is to make sure it does not display on the front. I still want people to register with their real addresses.

You have full control over what they see on the site. Do you have a link to what you are talking about?

Okay, my miscasting of the problem I think. Some of our registered users find their email addresses are appearing on the site when they comment. How do they switch that off from their profiles?

In your comment form, you’d need to change from:
<div class="posted">Posted by {url_or_email_as_author} on {comment_date format='%m/%d'} at {comment_date format='%h:%i %A'}</div>to:
<div class="posted">Posted by {name} on {comment_date format='%m/%d'} at {comment_date format='%h:%i %A'}</div>This is assuming you’re using the comment code that comes with EE.

Would that give the commenters the choice Sue?
#12 / Jul 27, 2009 12:03pm
No, it doesn’t. There isn’t a member choice that has show my email address or not. There is one for show me online or not, but that’s it.
