I have successfully installed EE 1.6.7 as a trial on one server, so I am familiar with the process. I am now trying to install it on the “real” server - a shared hosting setup with Rapidhost.co.uk. For reasons we can leave aside, my mysql database needs to be hosted on a separate server with the same hosting firm (mysql.rapidhost.co.uk). I have successfully logged on to this database using a database manager program, Navicat, so I know it is accessible using the credentials provided by rapidhost.

When I run the EE install, after providing all the usual settings information, I get an essentially blank screen - just the EE “banner” at the top. I have gone through the process twice (selecting a different theme on each occasion), and checked carefully all the settings info. Same result.

Does that mean you never get past the installation stage? No error messages of any kind? Are you using the latest build? Separating the web and db server is quite common (in fact recommended from a performance point of view in many cases) and should not be an issue.

No messages of any kind - just an essentially blank browser, except for the EE banner at the top. I believe the URL displayed in the browser address bar ends in “page 5”.

I am using 1.6.7. Do you have build numbers within version numbers? I downloaded it maybe three weeks ago.

A white screen is usually indicating a suppressed PHP error, often because PHP runs out of memory. Can you check how much RAM your PHP environment has, and perhaps try to increase it? You also might want to turn on error reporting for PHP, see if that gets us a clearer error message.

Thanks. This install is on a server where I have no experience of the PHP setup, so I will need to talk to the hosting firm’s support people.

    I’ll get back to you.

Chris, just checking in and seeing how you are getting on with this. Did you have any luck with your host?

Yes - sorry, I should have posted something before now. My hosting company has completed the install and made the following report:

To resolve this issue I download the server wizard checker from here http://expressionengine.com/docs/requirements.html which helped identify and resolve the problem. Also I checked the installation docs. For your reference this was due to various things:

    1. A number of folders & files required write permissions (as in the installation documentation), this wasn’t done (you would’ve needed to ask us to do that anyway)
    2. A couple of tweaks needed to be made to the php.ini
    3. There was a misconfiguration of your MySQL user which didn’t allow it to see the database.

It’s all a bit vague, but the key thing would appear to be the wizard he refers to. I hadn’t heard about that.

Glad you were able to figure out what the problem was. Don’t hesitate to post again as needed.
