If I’m not mistaken, EE Forum users are automatically added to the “member” group, which can be used to send email.

Or you can set up a special forum members group and put those members in there, and use that for mailings. =)

thanks for help, my concerns
grumps: if i’m not wrong, that doesn’t manage unsubscribes automatically, it’s just a mass mailing.
lisa: i should do that manually? is there a way to do a sync daily for example automatically without overwriting already unsubscribed users?
i need them to be on mailing list to comply with law (and netiquette i should add), and if they unsubscribe not to be readded automatically

Hi, photek - the solution I gave was the same as grumps. Users can choose to receive email in their front-end control panel:
http://ellislab.com/forums/member/edit_email/
so that is how removals would be handled.
Another option is to use the User Module from Solspace, which has this feature.

You can also just include a hidden checkbox in the default registration form. See this thread so that when a member registers, they are also added on to the mailing list you included.

The forum has its own member templates, which you can choose to use or not. You’ll want to include the checkbox on whichever form you’re using.

What does it mean that “The forum has its own member templates”? A separate user account is needed for forums vs the rest of the site?
I want to do what this thread is talking about, but not with forums. I will allow people to register for my site, and in doing so I want them to be subscribed to my mailing list. Then if they want to unsubscribe they can do that. In the EE features list it mentions a double opt-in mailing list. Do the instructions provided above make use of that? I want to subscribe people to my mailing list when they register, but I also would prefer if that process was double opt-in.
Thanks

Hi, photek - no, the membership accounts are installation-wide. But the forum theme (look and feel of the forums) has its own set of member templates separate from what comes with EE. Those need to be accounted for in some way.
The member group registration is a bit different - they can opt out by choosing not to receive email from the site. The mailing list folks can simply click an unsubscribe link. You’ll need to choose which work-flow is most appropriate for your project.
You can also have a registered member automatically added to the mailing list, and the same routines apply there as when they subscribe separately.
