    Hi.

I own a Commercial EE license. Due to growing frustration with my current hosting company (they will remain nameless although I’m sure many of you who read the forums could make a good guess!), I’ve found a new provider and would like to install EE on their new server.

I want to make sure the new install goes smoothly and I need to make sure everything is up and running correctly, without problems, on the new server before I change over the name servers from my old host.

    Basically I’ve got two questions:

    1) Am I going to run into any foreseeable issues making this transition in regards to my software license? Can I have two installed versions running at the same time, say for about a week or so, until I know everything is running correctly with the new host?

    2) Regarding the database, is there a proper or recommended method for transferring the DB info from the current server to the new one? I found this link, which seems to be what I need although it seems rather wordy:

    Moving Servers

Just wondering if there’s a “Dummy’s Guide to General Transfer of EE DB” out there somewhere. Thanks for your help.

    1) Your license entitles you to one publicly accessible site at any one time. If you setup a second site, but make sure that the general public can’t access it, that’s fine.

    2) Just make a db backup, using whatever tools or means you are comfortable with, then import on the new site.

For a somewhat more concise version, try this: http://expressionengine.com/knowledge_base/article/how_do_i_move_ee_to_another_server/

Ingmar, that does bring up an interesting question.

When EE is moved from one host to another (assuming transfer, import, setup all go OK), there’s a moment when the official change switch is clicked. That’s when the domain is changed from pointing to the old server to point to the new server. Sometimes the actual change is minutes to hours. Sometimes it’s a few days. Regardless, there is some overlap where both EE installs, the old and the new, are running at the same time, publicly accessible.

In the interest of fairness and intent (to move from one EE install to another), that should be allowable, right?

Hi, Ronnie - in the case where they are both the same site but there is some cross-over due to propagation, you’ll be fine.  However if you were going to run both concurrently for an extended period (more than the few hours needed to propagate the domain name change) you’d need to set one offline.  I’ve done this when moving sites in order to ensure that the information was there in case I had missed something in the move.

    Okay. Thanks Ingmar.

I’ll let you know if I have any questions. Wish me luck.
