Hi

Am actually doing some research to set up a small e-commerce platform.  Looking at ee its just awesome for cms.  I like it because it removes me the pain of skinning it.  But then am a bit confused about the shopping cart things and all.  Below an outline of my project :

Frontend part.

Create account
A showcase of product categories.
A cart.
On checkout the user logins into his/her account and prints a details sheet of what he/she ordered.  (For offline payment)

Backend

Possibility to organise the products of course.
Manage accounts.
Manage orders.
Create receipts from orders.

To what extend can ee with simple commerce be applied.  Or is it preferable to get ee +Foxycart + Foxee

for what you describe the way to go would be EE + Foxycart/Foxee. The Simple Commerce module is just that, simple and it sounds like you need a more advanced solution.

Another question can ee manage user created accounts or will amember be more appropriate.  I was looking at a member it does a lot, but i dont really need them.
Management on user account is quite straight forward.  If ee can do this it will save me a few bucks.

I’d suggest starting with EE’s native member functionality. Its quite flexible in a lot of situations, so start there and only consider 3rd party solutions when absolutely necessary.

integrating FoxyCart into your site with the help of FoxEE is really easy, and skinning your cart and checkout template is a breeze. Just create a template that has your header and footer ( and side bar if necessary) and add the ^^cart^^ tag into your main content section. Cache it into FoxyCart and you done.

FoxEE also has the ability to move members to new groups during checkout, so once they have purchased you can move them to a “customer” group lets say to keep track of all your customers. You can also use the subscriptions feature to put a time limitation on their membership, like an annual subscription.
