Just thinking out loud here, but wouldn’t it be awesome if we were able to take our CI applications and package them up as executable programs for offline use? I was just looking at AIR and said to myself “Self, why don’t they have something like this for PHP?” Yes, I know about MAMP/WAMP to run servers locally put couldn’t they package everything up (or at least the necessities like MySQL/PHP) into a framework that would install with your program? That’s how AIR and .NET does it.

Most people don’t work offline though so when would the application be used?

Everyone works offline. Even web developers. Maybe I worded my OP incorrectly. But what I meant is, wouldn’t it be nice to write PHP applications for offline use. Not just convert our existing CI web sites into offline versions. Sorry.

I would love to have offline applications as extensions to my web sites. And I have several sites that I’ve created to assist with data I use offline such as event registrations. I pay a high annual fee for me to import my data into mediocre event management software. I could save a ton and possibly make additional money selling customized PHP software. I also have a network of web sites collecting leads for my company. Each lead is assigned to one of our 150 locations in USA. Each store normally gets their leads via e-mail. But with offline software, we could have each office receive an alert and require they update us on the status of the lead. Customized software for my company could improve efficiency. Instead of having to use 5 different applications to run daily operations, have 1 customized application that is tailored for our needs.

So how has AIR been working out for you? You can make some pretty cool looking programs from what I see. But I’m not very good with Flash/Flex or designing in general. Wonder if AIR ever plans to include a PHP engine.
