    Hi All,

I have a site that will be covering different geographic locations, as well as different types of posts. Below is a general summary of the structure I am hoping for:

    Region 1
    —Topic 1
    —Topic 2
    - City 1
    —Topic 1
    —Topic 2
    - City 2
    —Topic 1
    —Topic 2
    - City 3
    —Topic 1
    —Topic 2

I am now trying to plan how to actually structure the weblogs, categories and sub-categories. From what I can tell, I can approach it one of two ways:

1)One weblog for my main “region”, with categories for each city and sub-categories for each of the topics.

Question: If I do sub-categories and nest them to the parent (i.e. the city) will they only be relevant to that city? What if I want to search the topics (sub-categories) at the region level, as they will be the same across each city?

2)A weblog for each of the different cities, piped together to create the total region with categories being topics.

Any help is more than appreciated.

    Thanks!

    Hey,

Not sure if this would help howevere you may want to look at the “Auto-Assign Category Parents” setting, as the EE docs state:

If this option is set to “yes”, when new entries that contain category assignments are submitted, the “parent” category of any sub-categories will be automatically assigned. If set to “no”, the entry will only be assigned to the child category.

Therefore with this set to “yes”, if you assign an entry to a sub-category, it will also automatically be assigned to all parent categories nested above that sub-category.

Looking at your structure, it is difficult to tell exactly how you’ll be pulling out information however I would consider creating the whole structure in one big category group (with the nested categories) and then simply assign each of your weblog entries / data to the categories with the above setting so that you can later pull the entries out either by specifying category=”” in your exp:weblog:entries tags or by using the weblog category heading tag to pull out entries according to a category specifed in the URL.
