    I set up one site ( 3 months ago) ..... I have Multiple Site Manager.  Do I have to completley install it again on another domain and then use multiple site manager to simply manage it… or when I use MSM it does it do the second site installation?  I don’t really have a blog have not gotten to that yet ... just the forums. I am confused.  Obviously.

    Thanks

    Frank

    You are not required to install everthing again. The copying of 2 files, path.php and index.php into the new domains directory is mostly what’s required.

    Please review the following documentation

    EE Docs: Creating a New Site

    EE Docs: Setup Domains and Sub-domains

    Thanks…. I looked at those. They are as clear as mud. If I only move two files to the new domain… there is NO system folder in the new domain to point to. ??????  Do I point it to the system folder on the other domain?  I don’t want to access the “same” forum from two domains… I could do that with a link.  I want two seperate and distinct forums.  Have I misunderstood all of this? That’s possible.

    Thanks Frank

    Hi, Frank. Have you gone through the docs for MSM

    On your second domain, you edit the path.php file to put in the path to the original site’s system folder.

    Forum Boards and Aliases is the link for the forum docs.

    If you look at the front page of the first link I shared, you can see an image of several different forums. That’s a real world example.

    Let’s work on getting the MSM working correctly first, then tackle forums.

    O.K.  the original is at http://www.rugbymodels.com/Blog/systemfox1wood

    Do I type that into the path variable on the second site>

    i.e.

    Second site

    <?php

    // ------------------------------------------------------
    // DO NOT ALTER THIS FILE UNLESS YOU HAVE A REASON TO

    // ------------------------------------------------------
    // Path to the directory containing your backend files

    $system_path = "http://www.rugbymodels.com/Blog/systemfox1wood/";

    // ------------------------------------------------------
    // MANUALLY CONFIGURABLE VARIABLES
    // See user guide for more information
    // ------------------------------------------------------

    $template_group = "";
    $site_name ="nexus";
    $template = "";
    $site_url = "";
    $site_index = "";
    $site_404 = "";
    $global_vars = array(); // This array must be associative

    if so nothing happens

    The system path needs to a path, not a URL, ie without http://... So, depending on your directory structure and setup, it could simply mean using something like

    ../systemfox1wood/

    which would move up one directory, out of the new location, and into “systemfox1wood again. Of course you can use an absolute path as well. The docs mention this example, by the way.

    Thank you ..  I repeat…. “There is no system file in that directory.. UNLESS I install the EE software in it.  It is on a completely different site. I know what relative paths are…..  That would be a relative path to NOTHING.

    FTamalenus - do you mean the site is on a different server?

    No the same physical sever but a different site .. domain… website.  I lease a server and have several domains ( URL’s )assigned to it. One site can’t see the other one. If I am in the directory structure of one… I can’t refernece the directory in another one with a relatiove URL . Am I making sense?

    Yes you are, but can you reference it with a full path?  This is not a URL, it’s a path.  They’re different in very important ways here.

    A path might look something like:

    /www/username/public_html/system/

    what does ” public_html” represent?  I guess Ive never used a Path to anything.  WAIT…

    O.K.  I think I just snagged one using the litt path feature in SmartFTP…. I will try that.  This is very confusing.

    Thanks

    I am sure I will be back

    O.K.  I filled in a variant on this.

    http://www.blb674:[email protected]/blb5300002/Blog/system/

    I assume that is it. I also filled in some of the other variables with the “new” short site name url etc.
    ,,, or should I fill them in with the old site info… or not fill them in at all.  Nothing tells me

    Anyway if I now go to the index page…. I get a blank… at least not an error meddaage..

    What’s next?

    Thanks

    No, that is still a URL.  A path never has the http://.

    Are you sure that is your server path, not an FTP user/pass?
