Is that really their name? 😉

I just tried this on my system and it works fine. I think the most likely reason it’s not working is either mod_security on your hosts server disallowing that e-mail address or perhaps the name or username. Might put in a question with them to see if that’s the case.
Also you’re not using any of the Admin->Members and Groups->User Banning facilities are you?
Best wishes,
Mark

Not using banning no.
He just had another one with .co.uk and it says invalid.
Seems to be an ee thing

Was the .co.uk John Doe again though?

I tried with the first e-mail address you gave and no problems on the latest build for me so I’m pretty sure this is more likely to be a mod_security issue or something like that.
What was the second e-mail (in full) that he tried? Also what were the usernames and screen names that he was trying as they can be banned in mod_security too sometimes.
I had this exact problem with a perfectly valid e-mail address when setting up our work web-site and was wondering what was going on. Had a word with my host and apparently my work colleagues name is used in a lot of SPAM although not my colleague who was doing it 😉 Just a common name in SPAM apparently.
They were able to give me a couple of lines of code which I placed into a .htaccess file to remedy it though. Sounds quite similar to the problem you are having here. I could be wrong though although with the e-mail address you first gave (I also used johndoe as the username and John Doe as the screen name) it went in fine for me.

Bruce, is it *just* that email address? Gotta agree with Mark. Sounds site specific. Do other gmail addresses work?

Hi Sue, was several all invalid.
Just thought to change in pref’s from self actualize to manually approved by admin and
now they work…really weird!
Thanks Sue
