I have to create a web portfolio for a job application, and I am wondering what all I should put in it? Screenshots, psd files, code? Anything else?

Anybody know of some good example web portfolios available to look at?

It really depends on what the job is for - design or development? As a designer, I think focusing on the design process and the end result is fine - through the use of screenshots and short bits of text. If you do dabble in some of the programming, leave it out unless it pertains to the design aspect of thigns (Javascript stuff).

For development, it’s going to be limited strictly to text. Screenshots are nice but you don’t want the reader to get caught up in them - this is about development not design and some of the most technologically advanced applications in the world us ASCII art (not pretty).

The best portfolio I’ve ever had for a development job was for my latest position. My portfolio consisted of my personal blog, the posts I make here, and references from a number of members in the community and my current work place. In other words, for development, the best thing you can do is get out there and do something - contribute, release some open source software, release a product, anything to get your name out there.

Great advice and suggestions! It is very much appreciated, as I have never been asked to supply a formal portfolio before, and wasn’t sure what type of things would be relavent and your post answered the question.

    Thanks

Not a bad question zimco.  You iz like a sponge dude…In my opinion your portfolio should be one of the hottest parts of your site.  Whatever you do make sure that your portfolio stands out.

Although i don’t come here often one great thing i learned from these guys is KISS(Keep it simple stupid) and “Keep an Open Mind.” Yeah it should be nice possibly ajaxified, rollover tooltips (to preserve space/Query).
Main thing you have to keep in mind is the WORK YOU ARE SHOWING.  There is a diff. b/w 2-5 projects and 20-30 right?

Remember to think it all out before you make start designing/developing it.  Here is a portfolio i think that stands out http://www.johnnyslack.com/ => oh yeah baby that one is nice.

If you dont have the skillset now, dont worry homey, if you keep on you will one day soon….Don’t give up EVER, keep plugging away.
