Has anyone come across and used a CMS called Traffik before - here’s the link: http://www.playintraffik.com/

I’d be really interested in hearing your views on it, particularly on how flexible it really is. I have a client that’s thinking about going that route.

Yes, I’ve pushed EE with them, but they don’t feel comfortable going with it because they know that version 2 is in the pipeline, and they want to see it in use first and aren’t convinced that the usability of the admin is as straight-forward as they’d like.

Seems like some rather substantial differences between the two. Traffik is a hosted service so you’re stuck with them forever.

That’s very true - and it’s not something I’d choose myself for that reason (also I like EE!), but I’m not making the decision. I guess I’m asking about how flexible it is from a development point of view i.e. building the site, rather than from an ongoing strategic point of view.

Sorry, I can’t help myself but ... Spanish Inquisition in reverse?

You used to need 5 expensive and difficult systems to manage your online business - eCommerce, CRM, email marketing and your website.

    😊

Thanks Niklas - I had come across that sometime back, but completely forgotten about it. Good to know who the original company behind things is.

Of course, by posting on the EE forums you’re going to get somewhat of a bias. My take is this. Using a hosted solution like this locks you into a CMS and a hosting provider. This ties you very closely to one solution, but in this case its not even clear who that is since you’re dealing with a reseller.

If you go with EE and you don’t like 2.0 you can move to another system. You’d have access to everything, including the code and the database. In other words, control is your hands, not the hands of the reseller or whatever they happen to be reselling.

This is the great compromise of hosted solutions. You typically get faster setup at the cost of control. With “do it yourself” solutions like EE there is more up front but you get to choose your own tools. For example, are their metrics as good as Google Analytics or Mint? Is the commerce solution going to meet your needs? The answer might be yes, but if its not, you have no options, no choice.

What if they can’t handle traffic spikes? You can’t move to a provider that can, etc… You get the idea.

Thanks, I couldn’t agree with you more Leslie. I should probably re-emphasise again that this is my client not me. That I have been and continue to push EE at all opportunities because I love its flexibility, openness, ease-of-use and the community and support that’s available. What you write echoes what I wrote to my client earlier which included the following:

I guess my main concerns at the moment is the extent to which you are constrained within their system and locked into their service.

I’m just trying to find out whether, aside from any strategic considerations, anyone here has any experience with this thing that they can share and basically confirm my suspicions that actually trying to develop with it is not so straight-forward.
