Interesting conversation tonight. When I work, I like thumping noises in the background but not irritating noises (ie clicking, tapping, eating!). Give me some rock n’ roll and I’m happy. I can code up some PHP with System of a Down blasting out quite happily, but throw in an apple eater and I’m doomed.

Or there are others that prefer total, blissful silence.

What’s your poison? I’m told if you’re the former you’re an extrovert, the latter an introvert!

Well I like the quite when I code and I would say that I am probably an introvert so seems like that’s true, well for me at least 😉

Then again being a musician too if I had music on then I would probably be thinking what key is that in and learning it in my head as I play by ear so that would be a very big distraction for me 😉

I can’t stand music in the background. DOn’t know why. I can handle regular TV most times. Sit coms, talk shows, CNN etc. But if I have my way, like I do right now, total silence. When there’s nobody home I turn the tv off and just work. No idea why though.

Music on always.  Sometimes quieter, sometimes louder, mostly blues, jazzy blues and rock - but when I really need to concentrate and crank out work I return to my HS years and drag out the 80’s hairbands…;)

Can’t work at all with talking going on - so no podcasts/news shows/talk radio.

And just FWIW - I always describe myself as just a “vert”.  I enjoy talking to people, talking in front of crowds,  sales calls etc - but couldn’t do it all the time.  I also enjoy heads-down coding sessions as well, but couldn’t do it all the time either.

I find that recently I need silence when I am coding. I am still learning so many new things that I need ultra concentration to get things right. I am not against having music on, in fact depending on what I am doing I will have Last.fm going, but during my recent EE project, silence has been the main thing.

Music. Sometimes I have to have my iPod on with earphones in so that I can concentrate on what I need to do else I get distracted all to easily (like writing this post instead of doing what I came to the site for today. Damn.). Apple eaters don’t distract me but if someone is sitting and watching what I am doing i go to pieces - can’t spell, fingers never hit the correct keys etc.

Dead silence 😊

Can sometimes have some muzak, low impact, easy listening but not often.

Well, I’ve been having a very productive couple of months with my writing, and I tend not to have anything going on in terms of background noise in my office, just as a matter of habit. So I guess I’m a silence guy.

Fiction writing isn’t exactly an extrovert’s hobby anyway.

I generally don’t have anything in the background.  Every once in a while I’ll turn some music of the TV on.  This is when I’m in a working mood.  When I’m not and need to get into the coding mind set, I do plug in the headphones, put on some tunes, and fire up Notepad++.  It oddly helps focus my energies and take the displeasure over spending a bright sunny day in front of the computer away.

Wehn listening to music while coding I prefer more energetic stuff, rock and metal. It doesn’t distract but kinda drives me onward.

I work in quite a corporate environment, our design team is sandwiched in between the server admins and IT helpline so the only music I can listen to is via headphones. Works for me though, especially as I can get pretty much whatever I want thanks to Last.fm on my iPhone. Mainly I listen to jazz, blues, afrobeat or underground hip hop.

looks like someone needs to build a last.fm addon in to the EE forums!!! Get a taste of what others are doing as they work!

I prefer something with a beat to nod my head to as i “work” (or so i pretend).

Seriously I’ve been listening to http://www.radiofreetexas.org/ it’s sometimes what might be called progressive country, normally I hate anything with a country label.
Hootie’s Darius Rucker was pretty good on the Tonight show last night. 😊

Always always music, I hate a silent room! We always listen to Radio 1 in the office, but to be honest I don’t care what it is as long as its (moderate) noise.

TV is good but I get distracted too easily!
