How reliable are related entries

We’re not far off going live with a large site which is using related entries and the Playa extension. Does anyone here have any experience of sites with very large numbers of related entries at all? Specifically how reliable are they?

I ‘think’ that last week we seemed to loose a load of relationships in the ‘exp_relationships’ table though I can’t be sure, certainly the ‘rel_data’ that should have been there has vanished. I’m petrified that we might get xx months into live and then have the same thing happen again, which would be a total and utter disaster.

the rel_data column is just used to cache the query result pertaining to that relationships (otherwise inevitable) query. This of course is undone occasionally by manually clearing the cache or the system self pruning it due to certain weblog entry updates, and the like.

They are 100% reliable in my experience.

Ok, I think I may have gotten to the bottom of this… I found a post elsewhere on the forum which noted that when using the Playa extension the ‘Save’ button does not actually save the relationships, you MUST use the ‘Update & Finish’ button for the relationships to be saved… I ‘think’ this is the source of my disappearing relationships! Thanks for your feedback though, much appreciated. 😊

Just a quick comment that extensions aside, relationships are certainly reliable; we use them extensively ourselves on our sites.

Thanks for the comment Derek, it certainly seems that in my particular scenario the relationships were trashed because of the extension. 😊
