Almost every time your customer upload a photo with photo gallery,
it comes from is camera, so it’s now about 3000*2000pixels 5megas. (to be shrinked with phto gallery Toolbox)

And upload… fails. Sometimes jpg is on the server but not in db, sometimes noothing, anyway ; after 5 minutes uploading, ee gallery display a blank white page.

    What are your advices ?
Maybe installing a softwear on customer’s PC for him to locally shrink images before uplaoding ?
Which soft ? (photoshop is expensive and heavy)

I can barely advice him to use the batching process, installing an FTP softwear, set it up and indicates the right folder is to much for my customers, they still confuse e-mails and websites…

    Merci, Sylvain.

I always prefer to do image manipulation prior to upload.  But if that’s out and they need it simple- they’re likely running out of php memory trying to upload images that large.

So- two things to try.  First- up your php memory.  You’ll probably needs something LARGE for those files.  Your host should be able to handle that for you.  Second- part of why it takes a lot of memory is it has to run through the xss filter.  Is your client logged in as a superadmin when uploading?  Superadmins can skip the filter, reducing the memory needed.

My advice would have to be - resize the image (before uploading it) to the largest size you are possibly going to need to use on the site.

There are plenty of online utilities that you can use to resize images the absolute best one being :

    http://rsizr.com

I play with that for ages sometimes just due to the fact that it has seam carving which is simply fantastic to watch and use!! 😉 That is until CS4 is out.

There are also many many small applications that you can download to batch convert photos for you. I work on OSX so know of loads for that but if you are on PC then someone else would have to help as I don’t use Windows machines. A good place to find software of all sorts though is Version Tracker. Nearly all of the software on there has links to trial downloads and there is also an awful lot that is free too so a great place to start I would think.

    Hope that helps.

    Best wishes,

    Mark

This has been a problem for a long time and just gets worse as the megapixels go up. What I recommend is clients use iPhoto (Mac), Picassa (PC) to manage their images. They can then choose the email function and the programs will resize/rez the images into an email. From there, they can copy/save the image and upload that.
I would imagine one could set up a moblog so they could just email the photo and then relate it to their main weblog.
