I just want to make sure I understand the basics of the Multiple Site Manager…

Using MSM I can run 3 websites (Commercial license + 2 that come with an initial MSM purchase) on one EE install as long as I own the sites and they are on the same server.

Each site has it’s own ‘virtual’ control panel meaning that as long as I have I have the site selected in the ‘sites’ tab, I control the weblogs, categories, etc… for that site.

Modules.  Every site can use the modules in the EE install but you can control mod settings on a per-site basis(?)  For example: if I were to buy solspace’s user mod, would I be able to use it across the install and keep users separate per site?

User can be shared across the install or limited per site.

Discussion forum can be shared across install but forums (categories, etc…) can be limited to each site.

I’m just getting my feet wet, so please excuse me if any of these questions have obvious answers.

Much of what you’re mentioning is correct except:

Modules.  Every site can use the modules in the EE install but you can control mod settings on a per-site basis(?) For example: if I were to buy solspace’s user mod, would I be able to use it across the install and keep users separate per site?

Modules are usable across multiple sites. However, not all modules are MSM aware. It depends on whether or not the third party author updated his/her code to be MSM aware.

Member groups are shared across sites. You can create member groups that you anticipate to be on one site or another.

    Solspace Docs: User Key

I’m pointing to the place in the Solspace docs that discusses User Keys. For more information on using this module, please visit the Solspace forums.

User can be shared across the install or limited per site.

No, they can’t. You only have one set of users. You can create templates that you can restrict access to based on which user group they are in.

Yes, you can have separate forums per site. For an example of this, you can see that there are forums also on the CodeIgniter Forums
