Templates instead of weblogs?

I’m just getting started with Expression Engine and I’m trying to work out a good website structure. I’m not sure if anyone here is familiar with Joomla but I would create sections and categories for that section. I realized the same can be done with templates, creating a template group and a new template inside that group to stand for the category. Is this the right way to handle the structure of a website using EE or should I try to accomplish this using weblogs?

Definitely weblogs. Coming from Joomla, there’s going to be a bit of a “culture shock”, if you will. EE is an article based CMS, not page based.

I come from a Joomla CMS experience, too, and now that I’ve used EE, I’ll rarely (if ever) go back to Joomla to build a website. It just takes some adjustment in your thinking to successfully switch from Joomla to EE. But it’s worth the effort. And weblogs are the way to go.

i also have used joomla and probably apart from the way the menu system works on the surface it is not really too shocking a difference. Although i must say with the amount of hacked joomla sites i have seen since 1.5 was released, i worry about anything on joomla now!!!

But yes, weblogs are the way to go from my opinion too…

Oh you poor Joomla people! 😉 Definitely go with weblogs, which I always rename to “sections” because it just makes more sense to me when talking and thinking about the site.

The term ‘weblog’ did puzzle me too when I first started using EE. But Nora, you were talking about categories? Categories can be made in EE as well, just so you know. You don’t need to make separate weblogs for that.

Thanks everyone, these posts really cleared up a lot 😊
I feel so stupid that I even considered using templates instead of webblogs.

It’s definitely hard getting used to, I believe I’ve been testing it for 5 days now and everyday I come across new features that amaze me.

By the way, thanks Doggie52, I was just experimenting with categories. 😊
