how to plan for growth

I’m looking to launch my first EE site soon and I’m starting to think about the details of the launch and what comes after.  Obviously, I’d like the site to take off, and I want to be prepared if it does.  But it might not take off right away and I don’t want to pay for more power than I need.

Right now I’ve been using shared hosting for misc. projects and it’s been fine.  But I see that EE takes more horsepower than something similar in CI (at least till EE2 I hope) and I want to prepare that the site not be overloaded and I have to scramble to find a new host.

I’m looking for guidance on planning for growth.  For example, until how many pageviews per month (or hour at peak loads) will shared hosting suffice (I’m with lunarpages now) and at what point will I need VPS.  With VPS there are many levels - how much would mem/cpu do I need for how much.  And then, at what point would I gain to move to dedicated/cloud?

I understand that it’s a hard question to answer and there are many factors.  So what I’m mainly asking for is for anyone with personal experience handling growth through these phases to share specific numbers (pageviews and/or users for which type of hosting).  I welcome recommendations of specific hosting providers, but I am more interested in the hosting type and when to prepare to move.

    many thanks, Y.
