    Hi there,

Just a very very quick one this. I was looking over at the CodeIgniter forums and noticed that they have the exact same number of users as here on ExpressionEngine. I then noticed that my login works on both ExpressionEngine and CodeIgniter.

I was just wondering exactly how many users are ExpressionEngine and how many are CodeIgniter?

    Best wishes,

Since they are members of both it would be hard to distinguish if they were members of either 😊 If your question relates to which site they originally registered I do not think EE has any out of the box functionality for tracking this count.

    Hi Daniel,

Yeah I thought it would be difficult to tell, was just curious really as to how many EE’ers there are and how many CodeIgniter’s. I know the boundaries are already starting to blur on that and will do so even more in the coming months but was just wondering. Perhaps the moderators know? 😉

It’s just that I had heard mention somewhere of ExpressionEngine having hundreds of thousands of users and I was just wondering where they are all hiding? 😉 😊 😉

    Best wishes,

It’s not necessary that every single user have an account here.  I think that number (from an interview with Rick, I think) is firstly an approximation of the end users not number of licenses.  So, if a particular install has 10 admins, that might count as 10 rather than 1.  Of course, this is just my speculation.  And secondly, perhaps a CEO pushing his product so a bit of parental bragging (in the form of some statistical inflation) might be going on there.

The only accurate way would be to find out how many EE licenses are sold and perhaps how times CI is downloaded (though, this is hard to gauge as I’m sure some have downloaded it multiple times).  I’m sure EL has the stats on the EE part though.

    Hi Benjamin,

Yes you might be right about the number being higher if there are more admins to one install I guess. I just thought I had heard that there were that many installs. Will wait to hear more on that one from one of the ‘team’ to see what they have to say.

The numbers Rick used were not based on registered users of our site, nor on any information gathered or assumed about end users of installed sites.  But EE is not a hosted service application, so if you’re expecting an exact number, you won’t find it; any such number will be an estimation based on a number of factors, some of which are public, some are not.  If anything, I think Rick’s numbers there are quite conservative.

    Hi Derek,

Thanks for that. Just my inquisitive nature really 😉

I guess a lot of people who have purchased ExpressionEngine don’t even come into the forums a lot of the time or even have a login perhaps? Also with people purchasing more than one install for different clients then I guess it is very difficult to get an exact representation I suppose.

    Best wishes,

    Mark
