I’m trying to sort out how permissions work, esp with regard to hidden forums.

    - Is it not possible, when setting up a group, to assign a list of members to it? All I’ve found is the one-at-a-time process of assigning a group to a member (in view member->member admin).

    - Can a user not be a member of more than one group?

    - Can permissions not be set at the discussion level?

As a hypothetical, imagine I’ve got a couple of discussions that are staff only, and I’ve got, say, a beta user discussion. Ideally, I’d like to have them in one hidden forum—staff members would have access to all three discussions, but non-staff beta testers could only see the beta discussion. If I have to put them in separate folders in order for the latter group to not see the staff threads, and if users can only belong to one group, the staff people couldn’t have access to the beta.

I feel certain I’m missing something (probably obvious) but I can’t figure out how to do any of the three bullet points above.

    Hi, Karen -

You assign members after the group is created.  Yes, the process you outlined is correct.

It is a 1:1 relationship of member to group; there are feature requests to allow a member to belong to multiple groups.

Yes, permissions can be set per forum, or per forum category.

    But not per topic/thread?

Well, no, you’d have to separate them by forum. It wouldn’t be feasible to set permissions time and again for every new thread.

There are always defaults, right? Why would you need to set them for every thread?

With my current forum, I can create a custom access list for any given thread in any case where that’s necessary (such as a beta group or a project thread) — just plug in the list of people I want to be able to see it.

Short of that, and given that people can only be members of one group, the whole “hidden” forum thing because sort of unworkable. Every discussion I want to make private has to be in its own forum to have its own permissions, and then permissions are only by group, and people can only belong to one group. So there’s no way to do what I described up top. Can that really be right?

I was just trying to test something and now can’t figure out how to delete the test thread. I can “close” it but can’t delete it.

I am sorry, all I can say is that the EE forum module does not have “per topic” permissions.

OK, well, I’ll have to hope and pray and do ritualistic dances that the feature request for multiple groups per member gets implemented.

Meanwhile, can you tell me how to delete a thread? Sorry, but I can’t stand to open a new topic for one quick little question (especially as dumb as that one).

Sorry, do you mean here on the forum? You aren’t allowed to do that; only admins can delete a posting or thread.

No, I mean on my own—the one I’m currently building. I’m in the middle of customizing it, created some test discussions for various purposes, and somehow can’t find a delete button anywhere. I can delete posts. I can delete whole forums through the CP. But how do I just delete a thread?

Try deleting the first post of the thread in question.

Good thing I asked — I would never have come up with that. THANK YOU, Ingmar.

Has there been any change on this? I’d like to be able to add members to multiple groups so they can access different (private/hidden) forums too.

No, this is still the same.
