Problem using the EE forums - browser gets stuck

This didn’t seem to fit anywhere, so I stuck it here. Mods, please feel free to move.

Ever since I starting investigating EE about three months ago, I’ve had a problem with the forums. If I click a link that goes outside EE’s domain, when I try to return with the back button the browser goes off into Never Never Land. Just keeps acting like it’s trying to load a page but never does. I can’t get back into the forums unless I close the browser window and open a new one. I’ve learned to always open external links in a new tab, but sometimes I forget; plus it’s kind of a pain to have to check the status bar every time and see if a link goes to another spot in the forum or outside.

This doesn’t happen all the time; maybe a third to half the time, with no discernable pattern. It doesn’t happen with any other sites. The browser’s Firefox 2. I haven’t really tested in IE because ... well, I haven’t.

    Anyone else have this problem?

    Thanks,
    Nathan

I can say for sure that I don’t have this problem, as I do that kind of workflow all the time and have never seen this.  I’m using Safari but used to use Firefox on my PC.

Are you running any Firefox extensions, perhaps?  Maybe an ISP issue too with proxy caching or similar.

Do you “one-click” your back button only, or does your browser have the drop-down menu to let you skip over a problematical page, such as an interim redirect that might be generated (as has been noted in Gmail’s webmail system)?

I do have some Firefox extensions. But, since the problem only evidences itself on EE’s site, I thought I’d check things out here first. Yesterday I thought I detected the problem while testing my EE site, which is hosted at EngineHosting, but by the time I realized it might be the same thing I’d closed the browser, and I can’t imagine how I made it happen because all my external links are coded to open in new tabs/windows.

McGehee ... actually, it’s neither the back button nor a dropdown. My mouse has a back button, which I use most of the time. But, again, this only happens on the EE site (or possibly on all EH sites). I don’t think it’s a redirect thing - it’s happened at enough different external sites that I don’t think that’s the problem. But thanks for the suggestion.

It’s not a horrible situation, and I’m not going to pursue it anymore until I install Firefox 3, which won’t be until I’ve convinced myself it renders just like FF 2. (I’ve installed 3 on my laptop.)

Again, thanks for the ideas. I just threw this out to see if anyone else was experiencing a similar problem. Since I haven’t heard anything to that effect, I’ll pursue locally once FF3 is on my desktop machine and I can make sure the problem still exists.
