I am familiar with using tags in WordPress (Technorati), but my question stems from the fact that our web developer set up a field for “topic” for each weblog.  I assume that it helps with the EE search feature, but not with web crawling services.  We currently do not have the Tag Module from Solspace installed. 

Will someone be willing to describe the differences and help make the case for or against using the tag module?  Thanks so much!

I rely upon tags quite heavily with WP, I wonder why it’s not already built into EE…

You’d really need to ask your web developer about the topics thing, that seems specific to your installation.

As for the Tag Module - it has a lot of built-in functionality, including related entries by tag, tag clouds, tagging by front-end users if you want that (it’s optional), and other great features that make it extremely useful for a site.

The “tag cloud” generated by Technorati for my blog contains the names of my EE categories, so they at least understand that aspect. (I don’t use an EE tag module.)

Also, I have the following in the HTML Head tag of my individual-entry template:

<META  name="keywords" content="{categories}{category_name}, {/categories} opinion, personal">

...which should help with search engines. Or would, if I had more concise category names.

ETA: The above only works because I have an exp:weblog:entries tag for the entry title in the HTML Title tag, and extended that tag to include the keyword tag as well.
