    Hiya,

Wasn’t really too sure where to post this one so hopefully this will get to the correct people.

Was just after a little bit of clarification on something really. If I was reading the ExpressionEngine licence correctly, when you pay for a licence you own that forever and are allowed to use it on that version of the software (or version up to one year after you have paid) for the rest of your life.

If I am right on that assumption then I was just wondering after the year has passed you obviously have to pay the extra fee for access to updates which is absolutely fine but what happens in the case of you paid for the software and after the years paid updates are over how do you then still download the original version that you paid for.

If the licence states that you can use the licence forever then would that not mean that you have access to the version you paid for forever? After the year is up your downloads just disappear from your downloads area and you have to pay for the updates access.

Please don’t take this the wrong way as I’m not having a rant, far from it as I don’t mind paying the upgrade fee at all as it is exceptionally good value but just wasn’t clear on the last point.

Perhaps a quick example might clear things up?

User pays for licence and downloads say v1.6 a year ago. They install this version on a site for a customer. After a year has passed the customer has decided that they don’t want to run with the ExpressionEngine software any more and they are moving across to some other (much lesser) 😉 CMS software. You say to the client that you have to delete all the installation files first as you don’t want them left lying around on their server for just anyone to use. What you really mean is that as they are not using it any more you can now use it on another clients site. Let’s say you were silly and hadn’t kept a backup of the software as the licence says you are allowed to do and now you want to download the software that goes with the licence that you originally paid for.

How do you do that without having to pay for an upgrade access account that you may not want as the software version might be good enough for your needs.

As a quick note I paid for an upgrade just the other day so this is definitely not a moan I was just trying to understand it all a bit better

Thanks for any help on all of this and hopefully someone understood what I was just on about 😉

    Best wishes,

    Mark

Like most software, its the responsibility of the person who purchased it to archive it if they want it for later use. We do not provide the original purchased software version at a later date.

I still have archived versions going back to 1.6.0—and yes, I am using 1.6.3

I’m not sure exactly why I keep those old versions, but at least I don’t still have any 0.x archived. That would be silly. 😕

Addendum: I should say, I don’t have anything that old out where I can find it easily. I might still have the first version I ever downloaded, stashed away on a CD or some external drive somewhere.

    Now I gotta go look.

Yep I have them too but was just wondering what the stance was here on the site due to the licence statement.

Was just wondering as I have someone who wants me to create their site but they want to purchase the software for themselves and I’m pretty sure that they won’t back it up. That being said I will! That now makes me think am I allowed to? If they have paid for it but I am installing it am I allowed to keep a copy for the duration of me doing their site, I guess so?

The other main reason for asking is that if someone purchases 1.6.x say a day before v2.0 comes out (unlikely I know) and then 1.6.x stops with development and purchasing does this mean that unless you download the file there and then you are going to lose it. I am pretty sure that this client won’t download immediately and will likely want to get their team of designers to look at EE first. I know that they won’t understand EE though even though to me it is the most straight-forward software out there but just wondering what happens in that kind of scenario?

    Best wishes,

    Mark

Oh, I do have some versions containing “PB” in the file name 😉
Silly? No, just being a bit sentimenal 😊

    Let me quote Leslie:

For those that own 1.x it will still be available for download [after 2.0 comes out]. When we’re closer to release more details will be available so you can plan accordingly.

    Thanks for that Ingmar.
