Hi All,
1) Does EE has basic ‘Tagging’ as part of it’s core code or as a free module?

2) If so, can you please elaborate what’s the exact difference between this Tagging module and Solspace’s 3 rd party Tagging module mentioned at:
http://expressionengine.com/downloads/details/tag_module/

BTW, the difference between tagging and categories (in general) is that tagging is user generated while categories are restricted to site administrators.

Sorry John - had to pop in on this one. The Tag Module can be used to also only allow site administrators to add tags. There is indeed a function to allow a form where users can tag items (entries) but this doesn’t have to be used. I am currently using the Tag Module on a site that I am creating and I am only using the administrator part of it. There won’t be any users submitting tags anywhere.

Just thought that might need a little clarification although yes the Tag Module can be used to provide that feature as well using the Tag Entry Form although I have never used that as I feel that the system really is much more powerful if you don’t use this but that’s just my take on it and probably due to the way I am setting up my site at the moment.

Key word being “in general.”  The hype with tagging on the web (come and gone) has always been about users organizing your content for you.  You could use tags as “admin only” but that seems a bit redundant to me when categories can be used for the same thing.  You could use tags in place of categories but that is still categories to me and I would rather use the native features for cateogorizing.  Perhaps this is just all semantics though.

Oops sorry didn’t see the (in general) previously. Yes you are absolutely right that users can organise content for you but on the site I am creating I definitely don’t want this happening and what I am doing could not be done with categories so the tag module in admin mode only is definitely a very very powerful tool but as they say it depends really on what your end goals are. 😉

For my site, I don’t want users to assign tags. I want only the admin to do that. Happy to know it’s possible with this Tagging module 😊

No problem 😉 Yep thought it might be good to let people know that you don’t have to use it like all the other social apps out there and in my case and my mind I think this is what gives it a lot more power. With the site I am creating, categories wouldn’t even be able to come close to what I am able to do with the Tag module.

Just thought Suri might want to know the difference between tagging with the Solspace module and categories in ExpressionEngine.  Categories can be used for tagging and it would be your only choice (without custom coding) if not for the tag module.  I have used the tag module but only for very basic tagging.  In this case both tags and categories were used.  I was thinking perhaps Mark might enlighten us to the more advanced features he has used to get power out of tags which categories have not been able to provide.  I’m sure Suri wouldn’t mind.  Right?  Suri?  ❓
