Do you think the recession will negatively affect website creation?

In reviewing our present state of economic affairs this question came to mind.

Those of us who make a decent side income from the creation of websites may not be totally erased from the business but for those getting into webmastering and learning how to build and code sites may be a little put off by smaller payouts. What do you think will be the ramifications in the future for the webmaster world?

A friend and I run a small computer store and at our end it’s been slower across the board. I’m having to do all the devel work at the shop, including the websites. I’m actually converting my devel code over to the CI framework to aid me in my maintenance. Once that’s done, I’m going to finish the site manager. I’m trying hard to make it point and click not only for me, but a very simple version for the clients. That way most things can be automated, and when I have to jump on a design it doesn’t throw me too far off course on the coding an such.

So I guess the ramifications for myself are the necessity to create better backend code so that I won’t have to be developing constantly(though I much rather would be…), giving me time to go above and beyond for the client.

The recession will no doubt necessitate many customers reducing their current expenditure on website design.

During a recession many other businesses take advantage of the situation and actually make money. When cash flow is a problem people usually need an easy payment scheme to assist with purchases. So maybe look into the markets which flourish during a recession.

A recession would definitely hit this area of work. Companies treat their website as an investment and depending on the business, possibly a cost centre. If they don’t have the usual funding to continue to invest at current levels some investment opportunities won’t be accepted.

If they can work with the current site they’ll probably keep it.
