What about 'permalink'

    I’d like to understand how to use permalinks but I don’t have clear idea.  The reference material speaks about retrieval from and preservation in archives; well and good. But when I post an entry, how do I “permalink” it?  Is permalink like a category?  When I post my entries, I see the permalink option next to comments and when I click on that I see a page that seems to be ready for entries.  I’m baffled.  Thanks.  peter

    A permalink is just an URL which points to a single-entry template with your entry, if you use comments usually the comments page.

    Silenz is correct of course, and the Wikipedia link does explain it in detail. Just for reference here (the thread will most likely be closed at some time):

    Permalink stands for ‘permanent’ link: For example, looking at the front page of a blog, you might be able to read a specific entry at a time, but after a while, it might be gone from there, because newer entries were publishing in the mean time. So, the front page is not a permanemt URL to that content. The permalink is the URL that never changes to access this entry, even if it is only accessibly through the archive (until it is deleted from the system, of course).

    Thanks for your responses.  Is the permalink url automatically inserted in the entry, added to the entry by the poster (perhaps by way of comment), given as a result to anyone searching in the archives for the blog?  Thanks, peter

    What should the URL be for a permalink? I do use comments templates, so should the URL look like “http://mysite.com/index.php/my_site/comments/my_article_is_here”? Do most permalinks go to the article with comments listed?

    In the default template the permalink goes to “index.php/site/article_name_here”, which apparently does not reference a template, but just a group. Does that mean it’s pulling the default template to render the article in?

    That would certainly work. The name of the template is up to you, of course. The only important thing is that the URL does not change down the road, but using either entry_id or url_title should ensure that.

    Yes, exactly.

    just a side note:

    i didn’t like how the permalink for my content had a url with “comments” in it.

    ie: http://www.yoursite.com/index.php/site/comments/unique-article-title

    i changed it so the “comments” part actually reads “permalink” so that now the permalink to the actual article looks more like:

    http://www.yoursite.com/index.php/articles/permalink/unique-article-content

    or

    http://www.yoursite.com/idex.php/news/permalink/unique-article-content

    in templates pointing to a “comments” page, change “comments” to “permalink” or any other word.

    change:

    {assign_variable:my_comments_template="comments"}

    to:

    {assign_variable:my_comments_template="permalink"}

    then, just change the name of your “comments” template to match the assigned variable.

    i’m still very new with EE, so i’m sure there are other, probably better, ways to do things… but this one worked for me. 😉
