Free ISP dial-up for Mac?

My wife has an old Mac Powerbook 1400 that has files on it that she needs to transfer to her iMac. I was thinking that the easiest way is probably to dial-up to the Internet and do a file transfer from there. Considering this, does anyone know of any reliable free ISP for the MAC that I can use for this one time (couple of hours) file transfer?

Or, is there an easy cable transfer that can be done?

    Thanks.

Hmm there isn’t any Firewire on the 1400 if my memory serves correctly just SCSI and ADB?

Not too sure what hard-drive is in it? Could it be possibly taken out and placed into a caddy to do what you need.

If not and the files aren’t too large then I suppose you are going to have to go the internet way but it is probably going to be quite slow I would have thought.

Looked in your profile and not too sure where you are in the world but in the UK we have adial, just one of quite a few. Not sure if you are in another country if the web-page comes up with international numbers or not though as I have no way of testing that.

Hope this helps a bit. Maybe someone else in here knows more about the 1400 though and can offer up some ideas?

    Best wishes,

    Mark

I’m in the U.S and I see there are quite a few free ISP options, just wanted to see if anyone had a good experience with any.

And thanks for your idea about the caddy, Mark.

No problems. Sorry didn’t know you were in the US. Hopefully you don’t have too many files on the computer or it could end up being quite a wait. I would myself get the hard drive out and find a way of getting it wired up to enable the file transfer instead. Perhaps be a good idea to ask on the Apple Support Forums to see if anyone there has any ideas or perhaps a local Apple Store?

Hope you get it sorted soon though.

    Best wishes,

Couldn’t you hook them together via Ethernet and file share?

I could be wrong but I don’t think that the 1400 has Ethernet. All it had (from memory) was a SCSI port and ADB?

I thought every Mac since the MacII had an Ethernet port till now with the MacBook-Air. But, then again I can’t recall the 1400 and it may have been different on laptops. All my laptops/desktops have had Ethernet.

You would need to get a AUI to 10/100baseTX “adaptor”.

You can look around, a quick look showed this one:

Though someone is selling a 50 pack! for $106 on ebay currently too…
