I’m sure the community would be on board for this, but I’m curious if anyone at Ellis Labs has an opinion on the idea of a closed beta release of ee2 to current ee paid or hosted users.

Sorry to be riding the premature-questions-and-comments bandwagon about ee2…

    Hi Dave,

I think there was some talk about there being some kind of release for developers to use so that they can get there inventions up to date before the final release comes out. Don’t know if or when that will happen though and exactly how many people it would go out to.

    Best wishes,

    Mark

Based on past releases Ellislab will likely not be releasing a beta to the community.  The reason is that the beta process gets to be just another big task to handle.  Most users will use the beta just to try it out rather than actually putting the system through any real testing.  Most users will also just bombard the developers with feature requests rather than actually finding any bugs.

Ellislab now has a bigger team and a dedicated QA guy so they are better equipped to do lots of testing than they have been in the past.  Working with people who have already gone though this process also helps so that they don’t get a pile of reports that are not really bugs (users sometimes report any funky thing that feels weird.)

I could be wrong but I thought I head mention that certain developers might get to see it (listening to the SXSW podcast that’s what I thought I heard?) first to enable them to port across their existing creations?

Yeah, I think they’ll do a dev release so that current plugins, modules, etc… can be made to work in EE 2.0. The exact details of that are yet unknown.

Not sure how they’ll decide who gets access and if it’ll be a full EE 2.0 version.

I know what you mean. My poor little plugins and extensions will probably break. Agggggggggggggghhh!! 😉

Well actually mine are so simple I’m positive they will be able to be converted in around a millisecond by just about anyone when we have EE coded in CI!

I think quite a few plugins and extensions will also become obsolete with the new version of EE if I understood the podcast correctly.

    Best wishes,

There will be a developer preview made available so that Add-on developers have the opportunity to update their work before we release 2.0 to the general public. There is no ETA on this quite yet but as stated elsewhere we intend to make this as painless as possible for all involved including 3rd party devs and people who use their solutions.

I’ll understand if I’m not one of the chosen few, my add-ons aren’t really all that good so I will totally understand if I am not in the loop 😉
