Using more disk space than expected

When trying to ftp I was getting a 450 ftp error and my disk quota says it has all been used up: 0MB Free (100MB Total)

But I’m confused because I should only be using just over 20Mb:
    the database is 1.3Mb
html/php expression engine CMS files come to 9.8Mb
the user guide advises ee needs 10Mb free disk space to run.

I’ve tried clearing the cache and increasing the disk quota to 500Mb but I’m still over the quota: Used 343.00%  Available -1215MB Free (500MB Total)

My problem is that it has suddenly jumped significantly over the original quota of 100MB

Just before I noticed the problem I deleted an extention file without first disabling it in the Extension Manager… and I’d been trying to get the captcha feature to work… apart from that it was business as usual.

Is it possible that a query or some other function has “blocked” the disk? I’m using 1.6.1

Excuse my lack of correct terminology!

    Many thanks in advance!

Hey, k8?x, welcome to the forums!

We’ll first need to identify where that space is being used.  Are you able to find out the disk space on your various folders? I’d be checking the cache folder, first.

Is it possible that the entire disk is out of space, not just your quota? It maybe worth asking your host for a breakdown of where you’re using your space.  They should be able to help you figure this out, so that we can see if it is even related to ExpressionEngine or not.

    Hi! Thanks for reply!

This is the breakdown of information in the folders in this domain
user 39Mb - contains following folders:
    - htdocs 8.8Mb
    - logfiles 30Mb
    - private 7Kb
    - webstats 187Kb
    system 0
    Maildir 0

with the estimated 10Mb for cms to function, my understanding is that 100Mb should be more than enough. However according to my cpanel I am using 1715Mb

There is a cache folder in the cms folder which I emptied yesterday and it now has 554Kb.

I’ve sent a query to the hosting provider but no reply as yet.  Do you need more information about the server?  All of the other domains in my account are well within the allocated quota of 100Mb and ftp is working fine on them.

Also, I can use my ee interface and even upload images through the image upload (which would imply that there is actually space even though the server says there isn’t). But when I try to ftp I get a 450 error.

    Grateful for any ideas!

I’m not seeing how it ads up to 100, or even close.  The logfiles folder is the biggest, but still nowhere close to max.  I’d see what the host says- they should be able to pinpoint this for us.  Possibly the temp is filling up or something- but a large jump suggests that’s not the case.

The host really should be able to help us out on this one.

The hosts support people weren’t able to help. However in the end the issue seemed to resolve by itself ... ghosts in the machine?
Thanks for the ideas anyway.  If it happens again I’ll investigate further.
