Just FYI—I’ve been getting a few more than normal spam comments the last couple of days.  I noted in my search logs that they are coming in with referrer phrases like:

community “Remember my personal information” “Notify me of follow-up comments.”

They then hand-enter comments, CAPTCHA and all, for the sole purpose of linking to their site.

In other words, they are finding & targeting blogs by using the default labels on the comments form in their searches.  I’ve changed the labels on my comments form this morning to some alternate wording to see if it helps mitigate the spam.

EE techhie note - this was one of those payback moments for implementing my weblogs all with a shared comments form.  Even though I run four blogs on the site, changing the wording in one template took care of all of them.

Tell me how it works for you.

And do you have guest posting enabled?  I disabled it so only registered members can post.  Are they registering AND posting, or just posting?

I imagine the fix will take a while to fully work it’s way into the search engine caches.

Guest posting, yes.  CAPTCHA enabled, whitelist and blacklist installed.

Hi Michael - I’m getting an increased dose of comment spam now and I’ve just implemented your tip - will let you know how it works out.

I have same permissions enabled as you.

    Tnx for the tip!

    Robert
