I have been using EE for a few months now and love it!  I am thinking about switching from phpBB to the EE forum module, but am wondering how much tweaking and customizing is necessary (and possible!).

Does it run out of the box the same way that EE does, and is it as flexible to customize as EE templates?

Any documentation or examples that are around that someone could point me to would be great.  Also, I would appreciate some people’s personal experience with using the EE forum module.

Customizing the forum is different from a regular EE template. Not necessarily more difficult, just different because of the way it is set up.

You can also browse the Showcase sites in the ‘Forum’ category.  It will give you a feel for what can be done.  Changing the style is pretty easy, but it really depends on what you want to do.  It’s not as flexible as the standard templates, but getting it to match the look and feel of the site isn’t a total killer.
