I thought maybe it was a fluke once when I used the spell checker and it said no errors, but I knew they were there. So again I checked today and it said no errors, then I checked my cgi error logs and sure enough the error are listed as…

So I cleared them and tried again, same thing. I am using 1.6.1 and build 20071204. So what do I do to fix this problem?

Hi, celeritycat - have you checked with your host about this? They may have seen this before since it is an error with the pspell library.

Also, I would encourage you to update to 1.6.2.  =)

Thanks Lisa, I will update today! Also I went to my host, PowWeb’s support forums and it seems I am not the only one with this recent problem. Their’s talk that PSPELL is depricated, but I am not sure, and it’s all a little confusing. The wierd thing is PHP info says that PSPELL is enabled, Oh well I appreciate the help and maybe with any luck all the posts at powweb forums will solve the issue!

It sounds like they may have an older version of pspell, if that’s the case.  Still good to follow up with them. =)

Yes, you might be right there! But unfortunately we can’t do anything about it. Powweb says it is taken care of on their end, but there has not been enough significant issues or problems to give it more attention. If you can believe that????

Yeah Actually I have, but seems like a lot of work and I don’t know what other hosts I trust. I have been with Powweb since 1999 and it’s not just moving ee over to a new server, but I have a rather large card and invitation service as well.

Well, you know, I prefer EngineHosting.  And moving EE is not too difficult, I’d imagine a similar method would work for your other project.  See this kb entry.

But in any case - other hosts you can trust, well, what can I say to that? This host is not exactly earning your trust with that kind of cavalier attitude…. =)

I checked out the engine hosting and though it’s a tiny more expensive then what I am paying now, it does indeed sound good! This is good food for thought, thanks so much.

This is the final responce I got after playing email tag for a while.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you. I notice that you need to change Expression Engine settings or you can contact Expression Engine service provider in this URL http://expressionengine.com/. I suggest you to use Mozilla browser it will show the spelling mistake when you type.

I don’t know what settings they are referring to. I dont think it’s fair that I’m supposed to use a certain browser to use an option that was working fine till a little over a week ago in Mozilla AND IE, but whatever! They say contatct you guys, you guys say contact them; SO my question is where do I go from here? Not everyone uses Mozilla. Is this a quick fix or am I in for a long battle with them?

Well, it would take a hack, but if you want to give it a try, you can force it to use google spellcheck instead of the pspell library.  That’s what it does if pspell isn’t installed.  Since it IS installed, it uses pspell.

Would be nice to make a feature request for this to be a user configurable as well.

Anyway- that’s the only thing I can think of- see if we can force it to use google via a hack.  As long as you have curl or openssl, that should work.

Make sense?  Yell if you want me to suggest the hack.  I’m not keen on them because you have to keep up with them when you upgrade.  Hm- wonder if you can ‘turn pspell off’ via htaccess?  No idea on that one- but it might be worth exploring as well.  If EE can’t find the pspell functions, it reverts to google automatically.

I asked over at their forums if anyone knew about turning PSPELL off via htaccess, but I am waiting. It seems like you should be able to do this, cause man you can do just about everything writing to your htaccess! I may need to call on that hack anyway, we shall see!
