Do I need msm?

    I have a scenario like so:

    domain.com
    sub1.domain.com
    sub2.domain.com
    sub3.domain.com

    My requirements are these:

    - Separate member lists for each site;
    - Content separate for each site;
    - Templates shared among sites (ideally, if possible).

    Do I require msm in order to pull this off, or can one install at domain.com achieve what I need?

    - Separate member lists for each site;

    Technically this is not possible with or without MSM.  What MSM will allow you to do, though, is have discrete member group permissions for each site, so you could have separate member groups for each Site, and “shut off” access to the Sites they do not “belong” to.

    - Content separate for each site;

    Only truly achievable with MSM.

    Keep in mind too that to receive technical support on a multi-domain installation, you would need to be using MSM.  Further, in any scenario of running one installation of ExpressionEngine, all Sites must be owned by the same entity.  Separate entities require separate licenses and installations.

    One other question about msm ..... how do the cp login locations work?

    For instance, if I have all these subdomains set up do all members have to access the control panel via domain.com/system, or can they have different login locations (eg sub1.domain.com/system, sub2.domain.com/system, sub3.domain.com/system?)

    Using masked cp access, each domain can have its own login point, and the member group permissions can specify for each Site whether or not they are allowed CP access (and weblog, etc.).
