MSM question - duplicating sites, the 'master site', etc.

I have yet to use the Multiple Site Manager, but will be doing so soon. I think I might be in a weird position though, and am wondering if I should fix this sooner rather than later.

I’ve got a client with an old pre-EE site. They are the classic budget-strapped non-profit and so aren’t really looking for any kind of full-site rework even though it would really save money for them in the long run.  They are potentially interested in slowly moving parts of their existing sites to EE so they can update them.

I recently did an install of EE for them on a subdomain for a very specific purpose (it’s an internal workgroup of around 20 people).  We are going to need to duplicate this site for a different workgroup (another group of about 20 people) - we need an identical copy of the existing workgroup site (which will then get modified from there by this specific workgroup).

So - after starting to look into the MSM docs, it appears that what I probably should have is an EE install for the main website as the ‘base’ install,  and each of these workgroup sites would then be a new site branching off of the main site (each on it’s own subdomain).

    So what I want:

    Base site
    —>subdomain
    —>subdomain

But what I currently have is an install at the subdomain level.

What should I do here?  How easy is it to switch things like this around?  Should I reinstall EE at the base site level and then re-create the subdomain as a MSM site?  How would I best go about doing that?

    Thanks for your help!
