    Hello!

We’re looking at purchasing ExpressionEngine Personal License for our school.  We think we might know the answer to most of these questions, but we wanted the official response so we’re absolutely clear.

    1. We would be purchasing enough licenses to run two separate sites, our public site and an intranet.  These sites are on two physical servers, and we are not willing to consolidate them.  Therefore, we must purchase two licenses and cannot use MSM, correct?

    2. Does the annual upgrade subscription of $19.95 apply per license, or per account?

    3. How are upgrades for the Forum module handled?  Is there an extra fee for these upgrades?

    4. Does the upgrade subscription apply to all versions, or only minor ones?  Specifically, we want to make sure we’ll be able to upgrade to 2.0 when it’s released.

    5. How different is the database model between 1.6.1 and 2.0?  We’re writing some fairly elaborate code to migrate data out of our existing CMS tools, and we want to know whether we should plan to migrate to EE 1.6.1 and then use the EllisLab-blessed migration path to 2.0 when it comes out, or whether it would make more sense to wait for EE 2 and then code our migration to that.  We basically want to make sure we’re not duplicating effort.

(If somebody at EllisLab were to ...accidentally… e-mail me the 2.0 release date, I certainly wouldn’t spread it to the world 😉)

Thank you very much for your assistance!  We appreciate your patience.

1 Look at requirements.  Sites using MSM must be on the same server.

    2.  Per license though I believe the article could specify that better.

    3. Renew once per year.

    4. The license gives you access to the download area for one year.  There is no other way to download.  So you need an updated license for any update.

    5. Here is a blog post on compatibility for development.

Thank you John and Nevin, I really appreciate the help!

I’ve been lurking for a couple months, so I already had an opportunity to read all of those links before posting.  Just to clarify, ExpressionEngine 2.0 is also going to be in the same download area as 1.6.1, so the subscription will cover 2.0 as well as 1.6.1?  And has there been any discussion about EE 2.0 changes in regards to the database format, versus the add-on API?

    Thanks again!

None of the info you have requested is available yet and likely won’t be until after March and SXSW.

As someone that is not part of the development group, all I can say for sure is that EE 2.0 will be written in php and uses MySQL as a database backend. Beyond that, I will be at SXSW to see the EE 2.0 sneak peek too 😉

Really?  I thought it ran on magic dust.  Or maybe that is just what you feed your developers to keep them up all night coding.  😉

Geez, Nevin is such a tease huh?

Anyways, I think the answer to your question is to just start coding dude!
