I took the CIW course at a college back in 2000. We had an excellent instructor. The course ran 4 hours a day, five days a week for three weeks, then we had a week off to study, then the whole cycle would repeat. I think this went on for four months.
It was a fantastic overview of the Internet, and the web, and provided an introduction to some of the popular tools of the day.
The one thing I wanted to know though, wasn’t covered. I wanted to know how to build a web form that could capture information from a visitor and load it into a database. While I didn’t learn that, I did get an introduction to web technology, and learned enough to get me started in a new field where I had no practical experience.
I did some research in my local market, and no one had ever heard of CIW certification, so I didn’t think it was worth the time an effort to take the exams, at least not for me. I did do 95% of the homework and studied like a mad-man spending hours and hours on the web each day. So I’m not CIW certified; I did fully complete the coursework though, and got a lot out of it.
If I had to do it all over again, I would take the course. At this point, I think I would be a bit board, but at the time it really helped me get some of the basic foundation of knowledge I needed to get started in my new career.
