My client would like to manage an online events calendar.  I didn’t notice any calendar modules/plugins. Is there an out-of-box solution to this? I’m guessing custom fields will probably be the solution?  They would like to post an event title, description, start/end dates/times etc.

Absolutely EE can do event calendars. The way that it is often handled is via a weblog where you enter each event as an entry, then you use the Calendar tag to output the information in the appropriate format

There is also a plugin called RepEET, found at our Wiki Plugins page
